Meeting Information / Directions
Toastmasters is not a traditional course. There is no teacher, nor are there other paid positions. The Toastmasters program involves regular meetings where we learn by doing. Meetings represent opportunities to practice and be evaluated on speeches and leadership roles following project guidelines in the Toastmaster manuals.
Membership is inexpensive, but it is not free. If you decide to join, you pay on-going dues of $8.50 per month. Dues are collected every six months ($51 per six months). If you are new to Toastmasters, there is also a one-time fee of $20 that covers four Toastmaster manuals--two that are sent right away, and two more that you receive after completing the ten projects in the basic communication manual.
As you complete manuals and leadership projects, you are awarded educational certificates from Toastmasters International. You may also request a letter be sent to your employer with each award. The highest award available from Toastmasters is called the Distinguished Toastmaster, which comes with a plaque engraved with your name, your achievement, the date, and Toastmaster info.
Sunriser meetings usually conform to a standard agenda. Meetings last an hour and include:
- Introduction and announcements
- One or more prepared speeches (typically 5-7 minutes each) on topics of members' choice but based on guidelines in a Toastmasters manual
- Impromptu speaking session, referred to as Table Topics, which are 1-2 minute speeches on topics assigned at meeting,
- Short evaluations of the prepared speeches providing encouraging feedback and constructive suggestions.
- Meeting wrap-up.
Speaking, evaluation and other assignments usually rotate through the members. Visitors are invited to participate in Table Topics (impromptu speaking) but may choose to observe.
